| Syracuse is usually right off the beaten track for tourists, few of whom proceed further south than the Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri. The population of this town is now around 120,000 but there was a time when Syracuse was one of the most important, strategic and wealthy cities in the Mediterranean and many of its buildings and archaeological ruins attest to this today. Article gives a brief history of the town and describes the atmosphere of the morning street market there. |
