|
|
It is no coincidence that Malaysia's constitution was first announced in Melaka. For this town is the very core of Malaysian history. It is here that Chinese traders brought merchandise in the sailing ships of earlier centuries, and married into Malay families to create the Nyonyas and Babas, families that eventually greatly influenced the country's history. The Dutch and Portuguese also had a substantial influence and later, British planters made Melaka an important base during the days of the British Empire.
From ancient churches to remnants of British forts and Baba and Nyonya residences, this is a remarkable town with great charm. Today Melaka is no longer an important port, but the town is steeped in history and is an interesting visit into Malaysia's past. The article sets out why Melaka is so historically important and what the visitor can see and do there. |
