| Though dates and stories vary, there is no doubt that the martini was born in gracious times, and is very much an American creation. Early writings in that country first mention it in 1862, but no one is sure when and how it originated. What is certain, however, is that the North American middle and upper classes enthusiastically embrace the concept. By the end of World War I the martini was firmly entrenched as America's favourite aperitif.
