Living like a Maharajah

Traditions recall the days when maharajahs were India's feudal rulers.
When India gained its independence the regional rulers of India lost much of their power if not their wealth. They had ruled from magnificent palaces which were now far too large to just be used as their homes. Many of these Maharajahs have now turned parts of their palaces into hotels that are of an opulence and style that has to be seen to be believed. The article describes one such palace, the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, and shows why we feel that these are some of the world’s finest ‘off the beaten track’ destinations.
