Petra -- Jordan

Camels wait patiently for their passengers in Jordan.
During the times of the Roman Empire, the Nabataeans built an incredible city in what today is Jordan. Hidden in eroded cliffs and carved into the stone walls were homes, temples, tombs, warehouses and the everyday necessities for what, in its day, was a very advanced civilization. Architecturally designed along Greek lines, these facades were as unique as they were inspiring. We went to explore Petra, but found ourselves in one of the rarest moments in Middle-Eastern weather patterns – a flash-flood which trapped us in these ancient ravines, followed by heavy snowfalls that blanketed this part of the Jordanian desert. The article describes our experience, and is interspersed with the history and mood of this wonder of the ancient world.

The ‘Treasury’, Petra’s most famous ‘building’ - it was really a tomb.
