Impressions Of Cuba – The Myth And The Reality

Havana's desolate waterfront area, the Malecon.
What a town Havana is! A city that was once a showpiece and a hub of commerce and wealth has virtually gone to sleep. Beautiful but decaying architecture, cars that have been caught in a fifty-year time warp, queues that stretch into the distance for transport and groceries, excellent health care, education and a high life expectancy, a strong police presence, sensational music and nightlife that is only available to foreign visitors, and a destination where, in spite of the ongoing friction with the US government, the US dollar reigns supreme. Article describes the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ experience of visiting Cuba’s capital.
