India is the last place where we had expected to find an absolutely top class Italian restaurant, so we were both surprised and delighted when we were introduced to frangipani at the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai. This multi-faceted restaurant that is also the hotel's coffee shop and breakfast area presents a very unusual concept to the diner and carries it out with a real flourish. The central theme is 'a theatre of food' where the presentation and the preparation of food play a leading role. Described as 'Food Theatre', the menu offers three 'stages' in food. The Full stage, the Cold stage and the Hot stage.

The Dining With a Difference series is written by Cherie Glaser, and features restaurants that are particularly distinctive, but not just on a culinary basis.
