Flying to Outback Australia with the Mailman |
Mail Delivery in Australia's Outback. |
| From Port Augusta on the coast of South Australia to Boulia is a long way indeed. Yet every weekend a 6-seater aircraft takes off from Port Augusta loaded with mail and packages for the lonely outback cattle stations that dot the heart of Central Australia. In the process the plane lands at oil and gas fields, in dry parched areas, at bountiful cattle stations and at Birdsville, the most famous --- or notorious, outback township. Here a handful of people swell to over 4,000 for one weekend a year when the Birdsville races bring people, planes, trucks and 4-wheel drives from every corner of Australia and, indeed, the world. The article describes the characters one meets, the loneliness of the outback and how this mailrun helps to alleviate this. |
